Project 4 Art Review

Tim Cantor

Huma Bhabha

Eric Timothy Carlson

1.    Be receptive:  This means keep an open mind.  Assume that the art has value and set out to discover it.  Don’t judge the work based on your feelings or preferences.

2.    Description:  Look at the work carefully and describe what you see and/or what is happening in detail.  Get as much background information as possible, such as the title, date, artist, country of origin, medium etc.  Ask yourself: what is already known about the time period, style, artist, etc.?  Is the work representational, non-representational or realistic?  Does it make use of modified images?  And so on.

3.    Formal Analysis:  Pick apart the composition or design.  Ask yourself:  What elements are emphasized?  How are they used?  What principles? How?  What design type?

4.    Bracketing:  Artists often refer to things from everyday life in their art.  Sometimes when we look at a work of art we are reminded of another artist or style of art.  Sometimes we notice iconography we are familiar with.  Think of what you are reminded of when you look at the work.

5.    Interpretation:  Stop and look at what you wrote down in steps two through four.  Put all the information together to determine the meaning of the art.  What strategy is the artist using?  Are there any symbols, metaphors or allegories that tell you anything about what the artist intended?  Do you have an emotional reaction that you think the artist wanted you to have?  Make your conclusions from the previous steps support your interpretation.

Tim Cantor
-  All of Tim Cantor's work really appeals to me because it is that all the pieces that he made for Imagine Dragons was constructed to each represent a story/song that was a part of the Smoke and Mirrors album.  I like how he connected a song to a work of art that further explained a story.  I actually attended an Imagine Dragons concert in which they had an art gallery to display all of his art which was very interesting to see as well.  All of the art is very real but always seems to have something placed in a weird environment like the girl falling through the sky and the very different looking tree figure.  They all represent something with a story.

Huma Bhabha
-  Like Tim Cantor Huma takes a very unreal perspective when it comes to art creation.  All of her pieces are said to be alien and si-fi inspired.  In various paintings she draws the image of a alien like person or figure and it is distorted with all different kinds of colors that in result finish with a very different but interesting looking piece

Eric Timothy Carlson
-  It is that right off the bat Eric comes off like someone who is symbolic and expressive in different ways and for Bon Iver ( American spiritual singer) to ask him to do his album art seemed like a guarantee to happen.  Hid various symbols and pieces like Tim Cantor are related to the songs in which Bon Ive created.  I really like the symbols that he creates because not only are they basic but they are also impactful and really seem to represent the song in which they are paired with.

13/14 Module Video Review

3cAn Acquiring Mind: Philippe de Montebello and The Metropolitan

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
3c.  Gathered art that was different and more. rare.  Purchased paintings to showcase and increase popularity.  Its amazing to see the transformation of popularity around the museum.
2b.  The environment of the exhibit should showcase/tell the story of the work of art.  Lots of new ideas begin to arise and new pieces are created.  They combined similar art pieces near one another.
1a.  They developed a new form of art that was more cartoon than real.  Throughout the 60's there was an art last in America creating pop. culture art forms.

2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.
Yes, because through out all videos new frames of art began to shape and people wanted areas in which they could display all different art forms.

3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of the art concepts you practiced while creating your curation project?
Yes because they showed many eras of time in which art was impacting.  And in times when art display museums were becoming more and more popular.

Module 12 Video Review

Isamu Noguchi: The Sculpture of Spaces

and
Hockney on Photography

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

Ever since I was young I've always really enjoyed photography so seeing that there was a video on photography it immediately caught my eye.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

Hockney would take a picture but then eliminate certain spaces to create a work of art itself.  He would also take pictures of one object but take zoomed in pictures of the one object like a building and piece them all back together to make his own piece.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

In relation to the text it is that photography is expressed a lot as an art form.  I believe that as well because to me photography is the most real that art can express itself.  Not only can a photography be art in its natural form like a basic picture.  Many photographers now use photo editing and creating in a digital media.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I thought that they were both very informative on their topics.

in some locations it is just hung on the walls and in some areas of the Al bright Knox there are columns.

Areas were spacious with large pieces and others were small rooms dedicated to many smaller pieces.

Questions about the artwork:

1. How are the artworks organized?

Next to one another casted on the walls and sculptures were in larger open areas

2. How are the artworks similar?

One area had one artists art only (Paul Cezanne).  His art using a lot of Female and male nude figures and the environment like nature.

3. How are the artworks different?

The works of art ranged to classical, digital, modern and so on.

4. How are the artworks framed?

Many were canvise and many were sculptures so not a lot of frames.

5. How are the artworks identified and labeled?

By a tag next to the work of art.

6. What is the proximity of the artwork to each other?

Very close but in other spaces separated.

What did you think of visiting the Gallery and purposefully looking at the exhibition from a different perspective - the physical space, the architecture, theme, etc.?

I thought that it was very purposeful.  It gets you in a mind set and an area in which it is only art.  Sure we see art everywhere everyday but to be in a gallery of art is a whole different experience.  Thus leading for one to be in a whole different perspective and mindset that is engulfed by art.

Module 11 Video reviews

Matisse and Picasso

and

The Mystical North: Spanish Art from the 19th Century to the Present

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

I chose Matisse and Picasso because I wanted to learn more about their relationship with one another.  I chose the Spanish art video because ancient art interests me.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

In the video Matisse and Picasso you find out that both artists were very different from one another.  From art styles to personality and most importantly there view on art.  They exchanged their art with one another and there relationship was very mutual it seemed.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

Like the readings they go over Picasso's art of using female figures a lot as well as in both videos they explain that his largest inspiration is true form and nature in his work.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

The films I thought were very informative and gave little interesting faces like how apparently they Picasso used a portrait of Matisse's daughter as a dart board.  Not super informative but it shows were there relationship stands.
